According to State Online (2017) professional nurse in today society is more than just a bedside helper, vital signs checker and medicine givers. Today professional nurse are communicators, holistic caregivers, instructors, specialists and researchers. The wide nature of today professional nurses responsibilities is a result of patients suffering from multiple illnesses as well as advancement in technology. Therefore, today professional nurses are required to have skills to operate different machines as well as give care to patients with multiple illnesses. Therefore, while interviewing a professional nurse, it is important to address wide range of aspects so that the nurse with right qualifications, skills and experience can be hired or recommended for particular position that needs a nurse profession.
In 2014, during an outbreak of Ebola, nurses and caregiver in west Africa banked on teamwork to save patients. One case that stood out in 2014 is where a group of nurses and caregivers went deep into the jungle of Sierra Leone to a village that was severely hit by Ebola outbreak to assist and curb the spread of disease (ARANDA, 2014). The village was remotely located with no good connection roads, but they still ensured that they reached there and offered help (ARANDA, 2014). Clearly from this example, it is always right to establish the teamwork skills and ability of professional nurse during an interview. A professional nurse should be able to demonstrate why teamwork is important and how he/she will promote teamwork. Without teamwork in nurse profession, it is very difficult to get everything right and on time. That is the same reason why nurses in the case of Sierra Leone banked on teamwork, and they were very successful. According to Global resource center, teamwork is important in healthcare for various reasons. First, health management has become too complicated, and nurses are expected to try complicated procedure and learn quickly. Therefore, without teamwork to brainstorm and come up with varied idea accuracy in trying new process are bound to fail. Nurses in country like brazil are expected to understand the need for varied culture which have different views when it comes to medication. Therefore, it is only through teamwork that nurses can learn the varied needs of communities and thus give appropriate care. It is also evident that working together as a team reduces the chances of making errors in caregiving (Global resource center, n.d.).
The world is full of cultures, and many countries enjoy diversity. Nurses are expected to have the ability to understand different cultures and thus adapt to them to make the patient comfortable when they are receiving care (Global resource center, n.d.). While interviewing a professional nurse, it is important to assess their adaptability quality. Some of the aspect to look at is the ability of the nurse to assess verbal and non-verbal cues which are key essence of differentiating culture. The nurse should demonstrate his/her ability through communication on how he/she can cooperate with patients while minimizing culture shock to give the best services to them. A good example of adaptability is when a nurse from Africa comes to USA for a nursing job. Adaptability should tell the nurse that in USA there are varied cultures include those with European origins, those with African origin, those with Hispanic origin and those with Asian origin. Therefore, the nurse should adapt top all these cultures and change accordingly when attending to patients based on their culture to avoid making the patient feel disrespected or undervalued.
While interviewing a professional nurse, it is also very important to assess how they manage their time. Time management is essential to nurses since most of their work is based on time management aspects. For example, patients need to be given medication in timely manner. Emergency services must also be based on time management to save lives. Therefore, a professional nurse should be able to demonstrate how he/she effectively manages time and the benefit he/she has seen from the effectiveness of time management (Global resource center, n.d.). Besides time management the interviewer must also asses the communication skills of the professional nurse. A professional nurse should be a good communicator so that they can offer the best care to the patient and relay information about the patient to the doctors and technician correctly and in timely manner. Above all, the interview should also evaluate the nurse core values and what motivates them. A nurse should always demonstrate professionalism in all that they do. The nurse should always show respect and value for human life. They should always be ready to go the extra mile to give their best to patients. Life should always come first to nurse, and they should always be ready to save lives every day. Nurse like other professions needs motivation. Therefore, interviewer should always try to ascertain what the nurse's value and thus go-ahead to provide to them when they are hired. Without motivation, there is high chance that nurses will less likely to give their topmost best.
Nurse profession is a challenging one. Nurses today are expected to offer more than just care. They are expected to learn as they work and be aware of trends in their fields. During an interview with a professional nurse, a nurse should demonstrate his/her core values, how they are prepared for their jobs and if they are destined to be nurse since being a nurse takes heart.
